The Onion Eaters
The Onion Eaters is a novel in which an extraordinarily endowed young man named Clayton Claw Cleaver Clementine comes to take possession of an ancient castle on the rocky coast of Ireland(?).
Notes
We discovered the book in a second hand shop in Auckland, and slowly worked through it. A bizarre, surreal, sensual, thing of a book. A legit question somebody posed is "why do you waste your time reading it?", and probably the only answer is because somebody has been crazy enough to write it, and that has to be celebrated. And because of the dog in it.
After the reading, I think I notice a common thread with other books I'm intrigued by now, as for example Otherworlds or Spectres de Marx. The protagonist, Clayton Claw Cleaver Clementine is always on the edge between being there and not being there. A ghostly presence. The centre of the pandemonium, but a centre that might well be absent and things keep turning in any case, because he is never truly absent. Nor present.
